This project became a priority of Main Street Rock Hall when it came to our attention that several of the existing murals in Rock Hall were – to a greater or lesser degree – in a state of deterioration and in need of attention.
These murals were a proud reflection of our community and its heritage. Execution of all of the murals involved broad-based community input and “elbow grease” to bring them to fruition, including participation from local school children, artists, and other interested citizens. Main Street Rock Hall, therefore actively sought involvement, input, and ideas, once again, from school children and community members, as we re-envision three murals for the future and recognize those who have contributed to their creation in the past.
To kick off the Murals of Rock Hall project we held an open house reception on Saturday, September 22, 2018, on Main Street. You can view the event flyer on its original event page.
Main Street Rock Hall and the Kent County Arts Council have undertaken the task of renewing and revitalizing three of Rock Hall’s murals. Our plan is to have the redesigned artwork in place before July 1st of 2019. Located on three Main Street buildings, the plans for the new designs are as follows:
- Mural #1 (on Main Street wall of Bayside Foods) This mural will focus on the lives and traditions of Chesapeake Bay watermen, who continue to ply their trade and have played a significant role in shaping the Rock Hall community.
- Mural #2 (along the back wall of Java Rock) This mural will pay tribute to the hard-working farmers who have been, and continue to be, an integral part of the Eastern Shore landscape.
- Mural #3 (at rear entrance to The Mainstay) This mural will depict the rich and bountiful natural resources of the Chesapeake Bay, which comprise a variety of native species from plants to fish to crustaceans.
